A Sea Change for Superior: The Warming of the World’s Largest Lake

Ah, the winter season is settling in with daily snow and seasonal low temps. A great opportunity to appreciate the peace and quiet of the season with a good book and a cozy fire in the fireplace.

And… a great opportunity to brush up on our list of winter reminders!

  • For the safest and best ways to move around our gravel roads, I always recommend (it has become a mantra, so please repeat) “snow tires for your car and ice cleats for your feet – snow tires for your car and ice cleats for your feet – snow tires for your car and ice cleats for your feet.”
  • Our heavy tree cover means it is often “icy” or, perhaps more accurately, “dicey,” so I have placed three sand barrels around the community if you need extra traction. They are near the entrances and under the Sophie Lane street sign.
  • Septic companies require access to your holding tank cover for pump-outs. You, or your home service provider, need to keep a path open and the cover clear.
  • Please read the Seasonal Cottage Checklists under Resources on our community website for more information about winter preparedness.

We hired a new snowplow operator to maintain our roads and driveways this winter. Keith Bressette has a long connection with Brickyard Creek, and I am elated to have him back working in the community!

We created a new snowplow map for Keith, and I’ve done a few practice runs with him to discuss the many nuisances when plowing our difficult gravel roads, including a host of obstacles such as wells, curb stops, holding tanks, power boxes, and significant drop-offs.

That said, I expect a bit of a learning curve, especially regarding member preferences, so I appreciate your patience as he learns the route. Keith is a hard worker, communicative, and skillful (and a much-needed early riser), so I am confident he is up to the challenge and grateful that he has made Brickyard Creek his priority.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Happy Holidays!
